Glutathione contains very powerful sulfur chemical groups. This is where it derives its amazing detoxification powers from. Sulfur is a very sticky molecule and as a result all the harmful toxins, drugs, free radicals, and heavy metals will be drawn to it, dealt with and removed from the body.

Chemically, it is a tripeptide composed of the amino acids glycine, glutamic acid and the sulfur-containing cysteine. Glutathione Has Many Important Roles so it is Important to Maintain High Levels

Numerous scientific studies have shown that glutathione is involved in many central biochemical processes. This begins with detoxification and the synthesis of proteins and extends over to the repairing of genetic material through to influencing the cell environment and aging. Because of this essential regulatory, antioxidant and detoxifying functions, just like vitamins and minerals, glutathione must always be available in sufficient quantities to aid optimal health. Only then is the smooth running of all the many metabolic processes which involve glutathione, can be guaranteed. Dr Bodo Kuklinski writes: “Glutathione is the most important cell protection factor. Each cell is immensely resilient, as long as their supply of glutathione is present predominantly in the reduced state. ” Unfortunately this is not always the case. If our bodies are exposed to toxic loads, we have an increased need for glutathione to carry out detoxification processes. If our glutathione reserves are too heavily called on due to a continued toxic load our glutathione reserves will become depleted and the pollutants can no longer be adequately detoxified. The cells of our bodies will then eventually become defenceless. This affects mainly the liver as it is the most important detoxification organ.

Help your Body to Protect Itself

Toxic compounds a which contribute to a depletion of glutathione in the liver are, for example, heavy metals, such as cadmium or mercury, the mycotoxin aflatoxin, pesticides, the pain relievers acetaminophen and alcohol. Additionally, when multiple stresses occur simultaneously, the toxic risk is high. All these factors are constantly attacking the body and combined make for a glutathione deficit, which inevitably exposes the liver to become even more vulnerable to toxic influences which it will be unable to deal with.
